Incoterms (International Commercial Terms) are a set of standardized trade terms developed by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) to facilitate international trade.

They define the responsibilities between the buyer and the seller regarding the delivery of goods, including who is responsible for transportation, insurance, and customs clearance.

Scope of Use:

•EXW, FCA, CPT, CIP, DAP, DPU, DDP: Applicable to all modes of transport

•FAS, FOB, CFR, CIF: Used only for sea and inland waterway transport.

For All Transport Modes:

EXW (Ex Works) (Pickup at Seller’s Premises) Seller’s responsibility: Only to make the goods available at their own premises. Buyer’s responsibility: All costs and risks for transport, insurance, and import/export handling.
FCA (Free Carrier) Seller’s responsibility: Deliver the goods to a carrier chosen by the buyer at an agreed location. Buyer’s responsibility: All costs and risks after the goods have been handed over to the carrier.
CPT (Carriage Paid To) Seller’s responsibility: Pay for transport to the agreed destination. Buyer’s responsibility: Risk transfers to the buyer once the goods are handed over to the carrier.

DPU (Delivered at Place Unloaded) Seller’s responsibility: Deliver and unload the goods at the agreed place. Buyer’s responsibility: Handle import processing and further transport.
DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) Seller’s responsibility: Everything — transport, insurance, export and import duties and taxes. Buyer’s responsibility: Receive the goods.

For Sea and Inland Waterway Transport Only:

FAS (Free Alongside Ship) Seller’s responsibility: Deliver the goods alongside the ship at the port of shipment. Buyer’s responsibility: All further costs and risk from that point onward.
FOB (Free On Board) Seller’s responsibility: Deliver the goods onboard the vessel chosen by the buyer. Buyer’s responsibility: Takes over transport and insurance risk once the goods are on board.
CFR (Cost and Freight) Seller’s responsibility: Pay for freight to the destination port. Buyer’s responsibility: Risk transfers to the buyer when the goods are loaded onto the ship.
CIF (Cost, Insurance, and Freight) Seller’s responsibility: Pay for freight and insurance to the destination port. Buyer’s responsibility: Risk transfers to the buyer once the goods are loaded onto the ship.

Incoterms only concern delivery – they do not cover payment methods, ownership rights, or compliance with local laws.

Version matters – Always use the latest version unless otherwise agreed.

Clear communication – Make sure to specify the exact place or port applicable to the chosen Incoterm.
